Join Simply Rhino, AKT II and Mindesk, for our live and online AR/VR focused Rhino 3D User Group meeting.

Meeting Information:
  • This live online Rhino 3D event took place on Thursday 25th February 2021
  • Time – 18:30 – 20:00 (UK Time)
  • The meeting was recorded and the video is shown below

We had two live presentations, firstly from the Parametric Applied Research Team (p.art) at engineers AKT II in London. Then we heard from Mindesk which develops a real-time platform for CAD software that allows the editing of 3D models in virtual reality. Following each presentation we had live Q&A sessions with our presenters.

AKT II have extensive experience in collaborative computational design. They have developed a suite of tools including structural façade, bioclimatic and sustainable design.

This presentation will use a complex timber gridshell as a cover for a case study on the use of advanced digital modelling tools and their interoperability. Here, a mix of an in-house developed suite of tools paired with Rhino and Grasshopper allowed the AKT II team to respond to an extremely challenging site. Complex analysis on the timber gridshell allowed them to engage fully with the material performance, enabling the architects to maintain a ‘light-touch’ approach and providing a sustainable output.

Mindesk is a plugin for Rhino 3D that allows users to edit .3dm files in VR or have real-time rendering through Unreal Engine. The latest developments include multi-user VR sessions, compatibility with Varjo (retina-resolution headset) and Hololens2, and a series of advanced features for the Unreal live link created upon the feedback of prominent AEC professionals.
